China faces an unprecedented demographic shift, with nearly 300 million people aged 60 or older, representing more than 21% of its population.

This rapid aging is not merely a social challenge but an economic one—particularly given the significant mismatch between eldercare supply and demand. Currently, China lacks over 18 million nursing home beds and faces a caregiver shortfall exceeding 10 million, underscoring a severe structural imbalance.

AI as a Game-Changer in China's Eldercare Crisis

In response to these stark challenges, China is strategically leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs) from companies like iFlytek, Alibaba, and Baidu. These technologies are transforming the eldercare industry by addressing China-specific problems:

  1. Addressing Regional Diversity with Multimodal AI: China's vast linguistic diversity presents unique hurdles for eldercare technology. Companies such as iFlytek have developed AI models with over 95% accuracy in recognizing 200 distinct local dialects, including Cantonese and Hokkien, allowing seamless and intuitive interaction for elderly users who are less comfortable with Mandarin or standard Chinese.
